Students and budding writers from Birmingham City University are gearing up for this year’s Birmingham Book Festival.
A group of students from the University’s School of English will be performing at the Festival’s Student Writers’ Performance Challenge on Monday 8 October, where teams of three from any West Midlands higher education institution are welcomed to perform short pieces of original creative writing to an audience.
Rhoda Thompson, who recently graduated from Birmingham City University with a postgraduate degree in Writing, said: “I’m delighted to represent the University in the Student Writers’ Performance Challenge at Birmingham Book Festival. The piece I’ll be performing is called ‘How the Garden Grows’ and is about what it’s like being different.”
Organised by Writing West Midlands, the literature development agency for the West Midlands, Birmingham Book Festival promotes excellent writing and hosts a range of events and activities celebrating literature through thought, reading and discussion.
Now in its 14th year, this year’s Birmingham Book Festival runs from 4 - 13 October and will include book readings, performances, quizzes and workshops with acclaimed writers, including Caitlin Moran, Stuart Maconie and Simon Armitage.
