University looks to international horizons in the South Asia

Birmingham City University will expand its international reputation today (Monday February 9th) by launching its first South Asian Liaison Office. The office will be opened by Paul Sabapathy CBE, Chairman of Birmingham City University and Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant for the County of the West Midlands.

The University will house its Liaison Office in the bustling city of Chennai, the fourth largest metropolitan area of India. This city centre office will act as a base for Birmingham City University in India, and will further support its successful recruitment in this important region.
The aims of the Liaison Office include:

  • To promote education through direct student recruitment activities and collaborative partnerships;
  • To develop further curriculum development;
  • To promote consultant services regarding project preparation, health and social care, IT and engineering sectors;
  • To support diversity through cultural and social awareness programmes.

Mr Sabapathy said: "The opening of this office is another exciting stage in the University's international plans. It will further boost the ambitions of the institution and help to spread the positive educational messages of the University to potential students in India. We also hope that being based in India will help to strengthen Anglo-Indian links, adding to the University's commitment to diversity."

Guests of honour include Mike Connor, Deputy High Commissioner British Deputy High Commission and Mr MA Alagappan, Executive Chairman of the Murugappa corporation, a $3-billion business conglomerate based in India.

Mr Alagappan was recently given an Honorary Doctorate from Birmingham City University in recognition of his outstanding business achievements. The Honorary Doctorate was conferred on him at the University's Awards Congregation ceremony in Symphony Hall, Birmingham.
