International collaboration was the key focus of a trip made by senior representatives from The University of Nicosia and the Intercollege Group Cyprus to Birmingham City University.

The Cypriot Government is keen to develop Cyprus into a hub for higher education, because the Mediterranean island is ideally situated at the crossroads of three continents – Europe, Asia and Africa.

Cypriot policy makers hope to exploit this regional and global demand for higher education programmes and are seeking advice from experts in the UK to support their international ambitions.

Birmingham City University was at the top of their list because of its reputation in developing partnerships, home and abroad.

Dr Nicos Nicolaou, Director of Educational Excellence Corporation (EDEX), the institution which looks after The University of Nicosia and Intercollege Group, said; “Birmingham City University has an impressive track record of innovation through partnership which captured our attention.

“Through this visit we have witnessed the stunning new developments at Birmingham City University and we hope to extend their flair into Cyprus in order to help provide programmes in a variety of delivery patterns that will serve local and international students.”

The interest in UK Higher Education is a result of recent increase in demand for UK awards to be taught, following Cyprus’ accession to the European Union in 2004. During their visit to Birmingham City University delegates from Cyprus expressed great interest in creating collaborations with all six of the University’s faculties, with particular emphasis on distance learning in the areas of Engineering and Business.

Birmingham City University has a reputation for global excellence thanks to superb links with industry, a range of international alliances and an expanding community from more than 80 countries. The University’s International Office was also the winner of a prestigious Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Award for 2011.
