Academics, opinion-formers and students from Birmingham City University are involved in a special debate tonight (Monday, September 5) examining the recent riots that shocked the nation.

The event is being organised by the flagship news programme BBC Radio 4 who have brought the forum to Birmingham, one of the cities recently affected by the riots

Experts from Birmingham City University who have been invited to share their views include Head of Psychology Professor Craig Jackson, criminologist Martin Glynn, philosopher Professor Mark Addis and Director of Employer Engagement Beverley Nielsen, who will also be co-hosting a Government fact-finding business tour at the School of Jewellery later in the week.

The riots debate will focus on three themes ‘policing’, ‘social intervention’ and ‘morality’. Hosted at Birmingham’s Town Hall on Victoria Square, it will be chaired by Today presenter James Naughtie.

Running from 7pm until 10pm the debate will be streamed live. Highlights from the event will also be aired on the Today programme on BBC Radio 4 over the course of the week.

One of the programme’s producers is Birmingham City University graduate Adam Cumiskey who will be using up to six student volunteers from the School of Media to help manage the complex broadcasting event.

  • Professor Jackson, who provided analysis to the media as the rioting impacted on the city, will share his own views in the run-up to today’s debate via social media, including the University’s official blogging Views@BCU. Also check out the University’s official twitter.
