A student at Birmingham City University is celebrating after a radio documentary he produced has been shortlisted for an award at this year’s New York Radio Festival.

The New York Radio Festival awards recognise outstanding radio programming and promotions in all lengths and formats from radio stations, networks and independent producers from across the globe.

Daniel Collins, from Erdington in Birmingham, has been nominated in the ‘Best Documentary’ category for his radio documentary on binge drinking.

‘Binge Drinking, Just Don’t Do It’, is a real-life documentary and explores the effects that binge drinking has on the families of those involved – looking specifically at Daniel’s own family.

The five-minute piece produced by Daniel as part of his radio production course at Birmingham City University features commentary from his father, David, who shares the story of his son, Simon, who sadly passed away in April 2011 as a result of binge drinking.

Both Daniel and his father David hope that the documentary will raise awareness amongst young people of the devastating effects that binge drinking can have on them and their friends and families. In the documentary, David says: “Go out, have a drink, have fun – but know your limits. Think about what you’re doing, because this doesn’t only change your life, it changes so many people around you.”

Award winners will be announced on 17 June at an Awards Gala at Manhattan Penthouse, New York.
