Student performance brings Greek mythology tale to life

Students from Birmingham School of Acting, part of Birmingham City University, are inviting audiences to a theatrical event suitable for the whole family, as they retell the fate of Icarus.

In Greek mythology, Icarus is the son of Daedalus, a master craftsman. The story told of Icarus encompasses his attempt to escape from Crete by using wings that his father constructed from feathers and wax.

Community and Applied Dance Theatre students at Birmingham School of Acting are to retell the fate of Icarus through innovative storytelling, song, dance, music and physical theatre in an outdoor arena at Mac Birmingham, formerly known as Midlands Art Centre.

Hannah Phillips, Course Director at Birmingham School of Acting, who has directed the performance, said: “Our contemporary telling of Icarus focuses on Icarus’ fall and how sometimes we need to fall to see what we need to do to fly”.

“Our telling of Icarus timely falls on Father’s Day and closely explores the relationship of father and son”.

Tickets are priced at £5 with performances taking place on Friday 15, Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 June – schools are invited to attend the Friday afternoon performance.
