STEAM Professor appointed Senior Editor of international teaching and learning journal

Professor Jean-Baptiste R.G. Souppez, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and STEAM Education

A Birmingham City University (BCU) academic has been appointed Senior Editor for Curriculum and Assessment Design at the Journal of University Teaching and Learning Practice (JUTLP).

Professor Jean-Baptiste Souppez is Professor of Mechanical Engineering and STEAM Education at BCU as well as a National Teaching Fellow and Principal Fellow of Advance HE.

Enhancing BCU’s reputation for teaching excellence, Professor Souppez’s work with the journal will help shape curriculums and assessments across the sector.

On his new role, Professor Souppez said “As a passionate educator, I am delighted to contribute to the work of JUTLP and lead on the publication of rigorous pedagogical research that has the potential to improve higher education practice across disciplines and institutions.

“This is also significant in cementing BCU’s position as a leader in evidence-informed pedagogies, teaching excellence and innovative curriculum design at an international scale.”

The JUTLP is a leading international, peer-reviewed journal focused on effective and innovative teaching and learning in higher education.

This appointment recognises Professor Souppez’s leadership in curriculum design, assessment, educational enhancement, and evidence-informed approaches to improving student outcomes.

It will also strengthen BCU’s growing profile in inclusive, practice-based education and higher education scholarship, enriching the University’s STEAM strategy.

STEAM education is a purposeful blend of arts, humanities, social sciences, technology, science, engineering and mathematics. The strategy is designed to equip graduates with creativity, critical judgement and technical capability to thrive in the evolving future workplaces.

Professor Souppez started in his new role on 1 July 2026, aiming to develop the talent for tomorrow with regional, national and international impact.
