A Birmingham City University Professor has been awarded an honorary doctorate from an American University in recognition for the collaborative work between the two universities.
Professor Stuart Brand, Director of Learning Experience at the University’s Centre for Enhancement of Learning and Teaching, has been awarded the title of ‘Honorary Doctor of Pedagogy’ from Northwest Missouri State University.
Professor Brand’s award formed part of the University’s Spring Commencement Ceremonies, where he was invited to be the Commencement Speaker.
Professor Brand said: “I am honoured and delighted to accept this accolade on behalf of Birmingham City University. It is such a positive sign of the value that colleagues at Northwest Missouri State University place in our partnership working. The experience of delivering the Commencement Speeches was certainly different and indeed awe-inspiring, with over 3,000 people at each ceremony!”
Birmingham City University forged an official partnership with Northwest Missouri University in 2010, to share insights about student employment programmes and to collaborate on student engagement processes.
Birmingham City University is a leading institution in student engagement; its award winning Student Academic Partners (SAP) Scheme has employed students alongside staff members within projects to develop the learning community. The Birmingham City University SAP framework is being expanded to achieve a wide range of student employment opportunities on campus, building on Northwest’s expertise in this area.
The collaboration between the two Universities looks set to flourish, with plans under way for future joint projects on peer mentoring, student exchanges and the development of a new Learning and Teaching Centre at Northwest.
