Birmingham City University has become the first university in the country to acquire state-of-the-art interviewing equipment for students on its criminal investigation course.

The equipment – costing around £50,000 - is capable of recording both audio and visual interview – and will form an integral part of the curriculum, teaching students the valuable skill of investigative interviewing of both suspects and witnesses.

Nick Howe, Course Director of the BSc (Hons) Criminal Investigation degree, said: “we are proud to be the first university in the country to get this equipment, thereby offering a first-class education for students on this course. This equipment has only recently been released to police forces so it’s a real coup for Birmingham City University to have it.

“It will undoubtedly teach our students valuable investigative skills needed for their future careers, thus equipping them for the world of work, before they leave university.”

The equipment comprises five portable kits and will allow for five interviews to be conducted at any one time and be viewed remotely in any of the Faculty’s classrooms.
