Shillong Chamber Choir hits the right chord in Birmingham

A former winner of India’s Got Talent wowed the audience at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (RBC) during a special visit to the UK’s second city.

The Shillong Chamber Choir has built a formidable international reputation with its rich harmonies and global musical blend – and even performed for US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

Birmingham City University Vice-Chancellor Professor David Mba, who gave a welcome speech before the concert, said it was an honour that the choir had chosen the Conservatoire as its only stop outside of London.

“We are most proud to be a centre of excellence for training world-class artists and musicians, who go on to develop their careers around the world,” said Professor Mba (pictured).

“In that light, having the Shillong Chamber Choir perform tonight is very special indeed.

“Your journey from a local choir to winning India’s Got Talent and performing for President Barack Obama is an inspiration to us, our students and graduates.”

Founded in 2001 by Neil Nongkynrih, the Shillong Chamber Choir rose to fame after winning India’s Got Talent in 2010 and earning three Gold Awards at the World Choir Games.

The concert, which took place on Friday 5 December, was hosted by the RBC in collaboration with the Consulate General of India in Birmingham, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, and The Nehru Centre in London.
