Professional body recognises student success

A team of ambitious students from Birmingham City University is celebrating after winning third place in a national competition.

The group of second year HNC Construction students represented the West Midlands Branch of Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) at the CIOB Student Challenge 2009.

The team consisting of: Daniel Lam, aged 23 and Marc Bailey, aged 22, both from Birmingham; Christopher Clements, aged 28 from Solihull and Andrew Pountney, aged 26 from Worcester battled against 10 other student teams from across the country. Challenge sponsor McCarthy & Stone set the steams the task to present a proposal that related to the ageing population.

Andrew commented: "it was a great competition to be involved in. It was a very challenging day which required organised team work. I'm very pleased with our third placement it has opened a few doors for potential networking and future career prospects."

Richard Jordan, Director of Marketing and Recruitment at the School of Property, Construction & Planning at Birmingham City University added: "this is an excellent example of the way in which the School works in partnership with its professional bodies to enhance the learning experience of its students within a vocational environment."

A trophy and a cheque for £50 for each student was presented to the successful team by Chauhdry Rashid, the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, at the Celebrating Construction 2009 exhibition at Birmingham's International Convention Centre (ICC).
