Professor David Maguire, part of the leadership team at Birmingham City University, has been appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Greenwich.
Professor Maguire, who is Pro Vice-Chancellor responsible for Corporate Development at Birmingham City University – including the research and employer engagement agendas – will take up his new post in London on October 1, 2011.
He will replace the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Baroness Tessa Blackstone who is retiring from her role at the University of Greenwich.
Professor Maguire said: “I have really enjoyed being at Birmingham City University, especially working with great colleagues who are very talented and friendly people.
“I genuinely believe that the University’s research and employer engagement activities have moved forward substantially and good things will result from the foundations we have laid.
“There is no question that the University boasts excellence in many parts of its teaching, research and enterprise activity.
“The University has an excellent leadership team with a clear vision for the challenges ahead. It’s my view that the new Corporate Plan, although still in development, promises to deliver a bright future for everyone at Birmingham City University.”
While at Birmingham City University, Professor Maguire led major strategic reviews of research, employer engagement and ICT projects.
Professor David Tidmarsh, Vice-Chancellor at Birmingham City University, said: “I wish to congratulate David Maguire on his appointment as Vice-Chancellor at the University of Greenwich.
“David has made a significant contribution to Birmingham City University since he has been with us and we will continue to benefit from the important corporate strategies he has helped to put into place. We wish him all the very best in his new role.”
Sir Stuart Etherington, Chairman of the University Court at the University of Greenwich, said: “We were looking for an enthusiastic, visionary and visible leader, with an entrepreneurial approach and I am delighted to say that we have found an outstanding candidate in David.”
Before arriving at Birmingham, Professor Maguire was Chief Scientist and Director of Products and International at Environmental Systems Research Institute (Esri Inc), a global software company based in California.
Professor Maguire holds a doctorate from the University of Bristol and is an acknowledged expert in computer mapping and geographic information systems. He has published seven books and over 100 scientific and technical publications.
