A Birmingham City University (BCU) expert has been named as one of just five inaugural Champions for the Goldsmiths’ Craft & Design Council (GC&DC), cementing the University’s position at the forefront of jewellery and silversmithing education in the UK.

Andrew Howard, Senior Lecturer at BCU’s renowned School of Jewellery, joins an elite group of industry and education leaders selected to amplify the GC&DC’s reach, champion its prestigious Awards and drive engagement across the country.

At BCU, Howard (pictured) has been instrumental in transforming student success. Since taking the lead on GC&DC entries in 2015, BCU students have achieved an exceptional medal haul, while the University has also captured the prestigious College Trophy six times in eight years.

“It is a huge honour to be selected,” said Howard. “I’ve always championed the Council’s work, and this role gives me the opportunity to support even more emerging talent to take that step and enter.”

Through his teaching on the Design for Industry course, Howard connects students with leading companies and world-class craftspeople, ensuring they graduate with both creative excellence and real industry insight.

Now, as an official GC&DC Champion, he will build on that impact, encouraging wider participation, strengthening regional connections and supporting the next generation of jewellers and silversmiths to succeed.

His appointment reinforces BCU’s reputation as a powerhouse for craft, where industry expertise, opportunity and ambition come together to shape future leaders.
