Playstation® Academic Scholarships on offer for University applicants

University News Last updated 26 July 2012

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) is offering PlayStation® Academic Scholarships, with a chance of a paid developer role at one of their UK studios, to Gamer Camp students at Birmingham City University.

Gamer Camp is Birmingham City University’s experience-building, Master’s course for aspiring games developers, supported by the likes of SCEE, UKIE, Codemasters and Rare, and taught by industry professionals.

Four students will have £4,000 of their Gamer Camp tuition fees paid for by SCEE’s PlayStation Academic Scholarship. A further award is up for grabs to be offered a paid position for up to six months, at one of SCEE’s UK games studios upon graduating from the Gamer Camp course. An interview panel comprised of SCEE developers will select students for the Scholarships.

"We are delighted to offer PlayStation Academic Scholarships in partnership with Gamer Camp: Pro for the second year running." said Dr. Maria Stukoff, Head of Academic Development at SCEE. "It’s a great opportunity for the next generation of British videogame talent to acquire professional development skills before they embark into a competitive industry.”

All students who apply for a place on Gamer Camp: Pro or Biz via www.GamerCamp.co.uk before the Scholarship's deadline of 9 August 2012 will automatically be considered for the PlayStation Academic Scholarship. Applications can still be made for the courses after this date, but will not be eligible for the Scholarship.

"I went on Gamer Camp: Nano in 2010 and got a job as an artist for a game developer as a direct result of the course, so I am now completing a Master’s on Gamer Camp: Pro,” said current Gamer Camp games art student Emma Douglas. “The industry connections and highly practical nature of Gamer Camp is what makes the experience so special; it’s like a real job in an actual games development studio."

“Having an active and influential partner in Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is a massive benefit to the Gamer Camp programme,” said Gamer Camp’s Co-founder and former Studio Director at SEGA, Guy Wilday. “Access to Sony development hardware, experienced industry support and the PlayStation Academic Scholarships provide Gamer Camp students with an unparalleled educational opportunity.”

For a free taste of the course, Gamer Camp is hosting an Open Day on Saturday 4 August 2012 at NTI Birmingham, part of Birmingham City University. Potential applicants will get to sample a games design session, hear more on how the course works and quiz current students.

To apply for the PlayStation Academic Scholarship, a Gamer Camp course, or register for the free Open Day, potential applicants should visit www.GamerCamp.co.uk.
