Professor Mary Carswell, former Pro-Vice Chancellor at Birmingham City University, has been awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to Higher Education.
Mary worked at the University for nine years after joining in 2006 as Pro-Vice Chancellor, with areas of work including focus on learning and teaching, widening participation and FE provision.
Mary introduced Partners for Success; an initiative to enhance the partnership aspect of the University and its students. Mary involved students with streamlining quality processes and built a greater relationship with the Students' Union; gaining a high level of engagement with the learning process. Her work resulted in the University being awarded a Times Higher Award for Outstanding Support for Students.
Working with the Students' Union, Mary also helped to develop and launch the University's OpportUNIty Student Jobs on Campus initiative; offering employment for students whilst studying, providing tangible experience and financial assistance.
Others receiving awards in the Queen's Birthday Honours List 2016 include actor and TV presenter Adil Ray for services to broadcasting and foster carer Deloris Collett for services to children and families.
