Nearly 30 students from El Jadida in Morocco have enjoyed their first taste of university life, after spending time at Birmingham City University this week.
Aged between 14 and 18, the students from L’Ange Bleu School met in the institution’s £62 million Parkside Building on the afternoon of Thursday 4 August, where Yang Bong from the International Office first explained the history of Birmingham City University and the hundreds of courses on offer.
The youngsters were given a campus tour, where they experienced the Universitiy’s cutting edge facilities including the 3D printing and laser cutting workshop, Europe’s largest static green screen and its room of historic, working printing presses. During the tour, they met with current students who showcased their current art and design projects.
Student Youssra Makmar said:
“I have been really impressed by the University, more than I expected to. I like the fact that graduates here go on to get really good jobs.”
The students visited Birmingham City University as part of a two-week summer study programme at Dudley College.
Arriving in the region on Sunday 24 July, their busy programme covers general English practice, enterprise workshops, employers visits and cultural trips to local places of interest. The students will return to Morocco on Sunday 6 August.
Hachimi Toufik was one of the three teachers who accompanied the school children from El Jadida. He said:
“I have heard a lot about Birmingham City University, so it was interesting to come here and see if for myself for the first time. I am most impressed by the amount of disciplines on offer at the University.”
The visit was facilitated by Birmingham City University’s Schools and Colleges Liaison team. Their aim is to raise both educational standards and aspirations, and to help remove any barriers that still surround entry to higher education.
