Whatever happened to record shops?

University News Last updated 21 November 2012

Birmingham City University and Creative Networks are to host a free screening of a documentary film next week, exploring the disappearance of record shops across the UK.

'Last Shop Standing' takes viewers behind the counter of the independent music store, charting the rapid rise of record shops in the 60s, 70s and 80s, as well as looking at the influence of music charts, the introduction of new technologies and the changes in how music is purchased.

The 50 minute documentary film features interviews with musicians including Paul Weller, Norman Cook and Nerina Pallot, as they discuss how music shops became and still are a part of their own education.

Q&A with Director

The screening at Birmingham City University on Thursday 29 November will be followed by a Q&A session with the film's Director, Pip Piper, CEO of the 'Producers Forum', a member's led film and media based organisation.

In 2006, Birmingham-based Pip set up Blue Hippo Media with colleague Rob Taylor, to develop large commercial film projects. Since its formation, the company has become internationally recognised, winning awards for both documentary and feature film. 'Last Shop Standing' is a collaboration between Blue Hippo Media and Proper Music Publishing.

Host of the event, Creative Networks, brings together parties involved in screen-based and sound based media in the West Midlands, promoting both successful business development and collaboration.

The event runs from 5.45pm until 8:45pm at the University’s Millennium Point campus.

Creative Networks are held at Millennium Point B4 7XG.

This event includes the monthly Music Network 4pm until 5.30pm and Birmingham Screen Image Network 4pm until 5.30pm.
