A group of new international students are celebrating after winning scholarships from Birmingham City University, with an award of £5,000 towards their tuition fees.
The winning students - Sunghee Lee, Huu Nam Phuc Nguyen and Thititorn Tongtooltush, were presented with a certificate and iPad gift at a special ceremony hosted by the University’s International Office on Tuesday 4 October.
Opening the event, Professor Bashir Makhoul, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Birmingham City University, said: “I’m delighted to welcome you to the Birmingham City University family and hope you have a fantastic year ahead. We hope that the scholarship will enable you to fulfil your potential.”
The students impressed the University with their achievements prior to entering higher education, with Sunghee’s work including fashion retail management and Huu Nam Phuc working for Samsung with desires of becoming an expert in logistics and supply chain management.
Thititorn Tongtooltush, from Watthana in Thailand, will be studying MA Global Media Management at Birmingham City University and brings extensive experience in concert and events management as she prepares for her studies in Birmingham. Thititorn’s previous projects also saw her win ‘Best Comedy Programme’ at the Asian Television Awards in Thailand.
Commenting on receiving the award and her first impressions of Birmingham, Thititorn said: “I couldn’t believe it when I found out I’d been awarded a scholarship to study here. Me and my family are very happy and really appreciate it. I want to thank the University as I didn’t think I’d ever get the chance to study in the UK.”
The celebratory event at the University’s City Centre Campus also recognised international students who had completed undergraduate study at the University and were continuing their studies with postgraduate programmes.
Andre Claude Anderson, studied Law at undergraduate level and is about to commence a postgraduate Legal Practice course with the University’s School of Law.
Speaking to the new students who were awarded scholarships, Andre said: “There’s so much to experience at the University and tons of societies to get involved with.
“I’ve continued studying here because you can do so much here and the opportunities are endless.”
