An industry expert who has worked with music stars such as David Bowie and U2 is visiting Birmingham City University to give his insights on the future of the music industry.
David Stopps, who is Director of Copyright and Related Rights for the Music Managers Forum UK and is a member of the British
Copyright Council, will be the guest speaker at the monthly Creative Networks held at the University’s Faculty of Technology, Engineering and the Environment which is based at Millennium Point in the city centre, run by the Faculty's School of Digital Media Technology and regularly staged over the past seven years , this month's event is Number 65.
David started his career as promoter of the famous Friars Club in Aylesbury. From 1969-84 he presented big name acts such as Genesis, The Kinks, The Jam, The Ramones and The Clash. In 1982 he went into management to represent 1980s music stars Marillion and Howard Jones, as he still does today. From 2002-2010 he was the United Nations representative for The International Music Managers Forum at WIPO (the World Intellectual Property Organisation) in Geneva.
At WIPO he represented all featured artists worldwide concerning new international treaty negotiation in the field of copyright and related rights.David is also a member of the Performer Board and the Main Board of UK related rights collection society PPL.
David will be giving his talk on Thursday 24 February and attendees will also receive a free pdf book How to make a Living from Music which was commissioned by WIPO. Aimed at teaching people how to make a living from music, his talk will provide a short history of the music business and how copyright has developed for songwriters and performers.
He will also discuss the use and importance of music in film, TV productions, advertising and video games, as well as the digital online delivery of music. He has formed a new company 3DiCD Media which aims to change the way music is sold online
