A visiting lecturer from Birmingham City University is behind the world premiere of a documentary exploring mental health issues to mark World Mental Health Day today (Monday, October 10).

Pip Piper, who teaches screen-writing at the University and also a partner with Birmingham-based Blue Hippo Media, will be screening the documentary Lunatic – taking the stigma out of mental health at the Midland Arts Centre (MAC) in Birmingham. Produced in partnership with Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, the 40-minute documentary uses scenes from the Blue Hippo-produced feature, The Insatiable Moon, to examine attitudes toward mental illness.

As part of a double-bill, the screening of the documentary will be followed by an exclusive Q&A with the film’s producers and then there will be an opportunity to see Blue Hippo’s international award-winning film, The Insatiable Moon.

The Insatiable Moon aims to tackle mental illness and homelessness with heart and compassion,” explained Pip Piper.

“It’s set in Auckland, New Zealand, and follows Arthur, a Maori psychiatric patient who claims to be the second son of God, as he tries to prevent the closure of a boarding house for the mentally ill and homeless.”

For a number of years Blue Hippo has been developing a range of a inspiring feature films and international documentaries.

The specialist media company also works closely with Birmingham City University, sharing its world-class expertise in film-making and creative production.
