Birmingham City University has announced the appointment of two Pro Vice-Chancellors to help deliver its ambitious strategic vision.
Professor Bashir Makhoul moves from the University of Southampton and Professor Paul Ivey from Coventry University to join Birmingham City University. They will formally take up their leadership roles in the autumn.
Professor Makhoul - an internationally recognised practising artist, is a champion of collaboration with creative industries, business and institutions - has been appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor Academic Portfolio and Market Development at Birmingham City University.
Professor Ivey, an engineer who has built strong academic relationships with industry and business, will take up the role of Pro Vice-Chancellor Engagement, Enterprise and Research at the University.
“I am delighted to welcome Professors Bashir Makhoul and Paul Ivey to Birmingham City University – both bring a wealth and breadth of experience to our learning community,” said Professor Cliff Allan, Vice-Chancellor at Birmingham City University.
“The University is visibly entering the next stage of its ambitious development. We have officially taken the keys to our newest building at the City Centre Campus which is a landmark facility and a beacon of our confident repositioning.
“Such investment in infrastructure is important - but having the right people is even more crucial. I know both Bashir and Paul, in their respective roles, will make vital contributions to the University’s work to further raise our profile and reputation in the region, the UK and internationally.”
In his new role at Birmingham City University, Professor Makhoul will provide senior academic leadership for the University’s academic portfolio and international strategy. This will include taking strategic leadership on student recruitment, marketing and communications, outreach, widening participation, access agreements, alumni and advancement. Professor Makhoul will also provide leadership of the further development of the University’s international strategy.
Professor Makhoul said: “I am excited and privileged to join Birmingham City University as Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic Portfolio and Market Development. Professor Ivey will provide senior academic leadership for the University’s strategy on business and employer engagement, and strengthen the University’s connections with the City and region. He will lead research, innovation and knowledge exchange development, expand commercial activities and oversee the University’s estate.
Professor Ivey said: “I am delighted to join Professor Allan’s team in leading Birmingham City University through the next phase of its exciting development. Already recognised as providing an outstanding student experience, exceptional campus development and a world leading conservatoire, Birmingham City University is superbly placed for the challenges ahead. A key challenge is be the University for a greater Birmingham, generating wealth, operating at the highest levels of scholarship and ensuring the widest possible access to higher education.”
