Construction and planning students at Birmingham City University will have a real-life building site on their doorstep to bring their studies to life.
The University’s new City Centre Campus is going to be used to teach students on courses such as Architectural Technology, Architecture, Building Surveying, Construction Management and Economics, Planning and Development, Quantity Surveying and Real Estate. Students who enrol on these courses, most of which still have some places available in Clearing, can look forward to having a working building site to enhance their studies with real-world experience.
This month (August) the university announced that Willmott Dixon has been chosen as the approved contractor for a £61m project, including phase one of its City Centre Campus – a landmark investment for the ‘University, the city and a new generation of students who seek the best skills’. The state-of-the-art facility at Birmingham’s Eastside will be part of the University’s overall £180million investment plan to provide the ideal learning environment to create skilled graduates to drive forward the local economy and meet the needs of national and international employers.
Birmingham-based Willmott Dixon will build the 18,310 sq metre facility on a plot adjacent to Millennium Point, where most the University’s property, construction and planning courses are taught, providing a purpose-built home for the world-class provision for the University’s Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD). Willmot Dixon will be collaborating with the university to set up student engagement groups to allow undergraduates and postgraduates to get involved with the build.
David Stanley, Assistant Project Director said: “It is really a great time to join the University to study at the School of Property, Construction and Planning. Willmott Dixon have agreed to allow our students to make site visits, and will be providing visiting lecturers to give talks to students which will enhance their employability once they graduate.
“Our students will be learning in Millennium Point and have a building site outside their front door – a real life case study. And it’s not just the construction of the City Centre Campus that the students will be able to benefit from, the new city centre park is being located nearby which they will have the opportunity to get involved with.”
