Wearable books, silicone rubber necklaces and jewellery made of rice will go on display this week as postgraduate students from Birmingham City University's School of Jewellery launch their 'Metaform' exhibition.
Running from 11 to 22 September, the show will see a new generation of jewellery makers showcase pieces that push the boundaries of both traditional and new technologies, with affinities to fashion, industrial design and fine art.
"Each maker has generated a body of work that demonstrates integrity of artistic enquiry and sensitivity to materials and processes," said Jivan Astfalck, course director for Jewellery, Silversmithing and Related Products.
"The exhibition pieces elicit an instantaneous sensual reaction of pleasure, a desire to touch, hold, use and wear."
Student Anqi Di will be exhibiting pieces of jewellery inspired by cities, including London and Birmingham, whilst Zheheng Ye will unveil wearable books portraying rapid urban development in Shanghai.
