Birmingham City University to double number of researchers

University News Last updated 23 October 2009

Birmingham City University is on a quest to find talented PhD students as it doubles its research community in a bid to deliver an ambitious investment plan worth £10million.

As part of this commitment the University is set to fund more than 30 PhD studentships over the next three years. This significant investment follows the University receiving official recognition for its world-leading research in a national quality audit - the Research Assessment Exercise (see Note1) - and a subsequent funding reward from Government.

"Birmingham City University is a new type of university that is seamlessly integrating research, innovation, knowledge exchange and regional engagement in a strategic fashion," said Professor Keith Osman, the Director of Research at Birmingham City University.

"Building on our success we are expanding our research base across many areas of the University. We have shown we can do very high quality research and we are planning to do much more of it.

"Over the next five years we will double the number of research-active staff and double the number of research students.

"To support the new research strategy we plan to invest over £10million in the next three years in existing and new centres of research excellence to further develop our research culture and environment - and to increase the impact and exploitation of our research."

This strategic investment, added Professor Osman, will create several new centres of research excellence, including areas of expertise in Health and Social Care, Low Carbon Technologies, plus a new cross-University institute specialising in Digital Experience.
