Birmingham City University’s biggest ever graduation ceremonies begin this week, with over 5,000 graduates gathering at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall donning gowns and mortar boards.
Beginning tomorrow (Tuesday 12 February), the nine ceremonies taking place over the next four weeks will see the next generation of engineers, lawyers and designers congregate as they gear up for the world of work.
The University will be awarding nine honorary doctorates, recognising outstanding achievements of individuals in their fields of work. Those receiving honorary awards include theatre director Jeremy Sams and former Birmingham City University student, property expert and TV presenter Jonnie Irwin.
Jonnie said: “I thoroughly enjoyed my time studying at Birmingham City University. I can say hand on heart that I wouldn’t be working in my current profession if it wasn’t for the staff at the University, which makes it even more of a privilege to receive this honorary doctorate from an institution I hold in such high regard.”
The University will also be celebrating the achievements of five graduates by honouring them with Alumni of the Year awards, including Nigel Hanson, being honoured for his work in leadership and community engagement.
Nigel graduated with a law degree in 2003 and has helped scores of young people develop their potential and raise their inspirations through sport for over 10 years, as well as acting as an independent adviser and Peer Reviewer to the Home Office’s Ending Youth and Gang Violence programme.
Nigel said: “The award recognises what I have done for others rather than myself; although I never set out to get recognised for any of the work I do, it’s very nice that I have been.”
Birmingham City University Vice-Chancellor Professor Cliff Allan said: “The graduation ceremonies are the highlight of the University’s calendar, when we celebrate the achievements of our exceptional students.
“The academic excellence and 'real world' skills secured at Birmingham City University are crucial to our graduates and to future economic growth. I know that the skills and the knowledge that they have gained during their time here at University will better equip them to take their place in the world. I send my warmest congratulations to everyone who graduated this year and wish everyone every success in their future chosen careers.
“I’d also like to congratulate this year’s honorary graduands and the Alumni of the Year recipients; all of which are exceptional ambassadors for the University.”
