Birmingham City University (BCU) has launched an ambitious new initiative to help small businesses, charities, and community organisations across the West Midlands access vital funding to upskill their workforce.
Through its Apprenticeship Levy Share Scheme, the University will cover 100% of apprenticeship training and assessment costs for eligible employers.
The move marks a major step in supporting regional economic development by removing financial barriers to hiring and training apprentices, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and voluntary, community, and social enterprises (VCSEs).
Professor David Mba, Vice-Chancellor of BCU, said: “This scheme is about more than just funding – it's about building a stronger, more inclusive workforce.
“We’re proud to use our levy to invest in local talent, champion social mobility, and help businesses thrive as part of our 2030 strategy.”
Eligible employers can apply for funding via a simple application process. BCU will:
- Conduct a tailored training needs analysis;
- Provide hands-on support throughout every stage;
- Fully fund new apprenticeships (up to the maximum funding band).
The scheme is open to:
- SMEs, VCSEs, and local organisations;
- Employers wishing to hire BCU alumni as apprentices;
- Organisations with new or existing staff ready to begin apprenticeship programmes.
BCU’s initiative not only supports economic growth but also aims to increase access to apprenticeships for underrepresented groups, reinforcing the University’s commitment to equity and opportunity for all.
By easing access to high-quality Higher and Degree Apprenticeship programmes, BCU is helping businesses address skills gaps, future-proof their teams, and nurture the next generation of talent in key sectors across the region.
BCU provides a host of degree apprenticeships, covering the subject areas of civil engineering; construction and built environment; health and life sciences; and creative and design.
