Birmingham City University (BCU) welcomed acclaimed filmmaker Gurinder Chadha OBE - the visionary director behind the global hit Bend It Like Beckham and the upcoming festive musical Christmas Karma - for an exclusive masterclass with Media, Film, and Journalism students.
Held in Studio A at the University’s City Centre Campus, the event offered students a rare opportunity to gain first-hand insights from one of Britain’s most pioneering filmmakers, whose remarkable journey began in Birmingham, as a journalist at BBC Radio WM.
Chadha, who spent time discussing her career with students before engaging in a lively Q&A, said: “It’s incredibly special to be back in Birmingham, where my storytelling journey began. This city gave me my start in journalism, which led to documentaries and, ultimately, filmmaking.”
Students quizzed Chadha on everything from her transition from journalism to film, to the creative process behind her landmark works including Bhaji on the Beach, Bride and Prejudice, Blinded By The Light, and her forthcoming release Christmas Karma.
“I always tell students to be curious, be brave, and tell the stories that only you can tell,” added Chadha. “That authenticity is your greatest strength.”
A vibrant, feel-good festive musical reimagining of A Christmas Carol, Christmas Karma features an all-star cast featuring Kunal Nayyar, Eva Longoria, Billy Porter, Boy George, Pixie Lott, Danny Dyer, and Hugh Bonneville.
It releases exclusively in UK and Irish cinemas on 14 November 2025.
Gurinder said: “Christmas Karma is a story about hope, redemption, and community - themes that feel particularly resonant right now. I can’t wait for audiences to experience it.”
Hosted by BCU’s Department of English and Media, the masterclass and Q&A proved to be a valuable and inspiring learning opportunity for students.
“Having Gurinder return to Birmingham and share her incredible experiences with our students is truly inspiring,” said Head of Department Matthew Day. “Her success shows exactly what’s possible for young people beginning their creative journeys right here in our city. Events like this bring industry insight to life and demonstrate the real-world impact of our teaching.”
Dharmesh Rajput, Course Director, BA (Hons) Media Production, said: “It was a fantastic opportunity for our first-year students to welcome such an inspiring guest as part of their TV Skills class, while our second-year students took on the roles of presenters and led a wonderful, engaging conversation with Gurinder. It was a memorable experience for everyone involved.”
The masterclass, which concluded with a group photo, will be available as part of BCU’s ongoing industry engagement and professional development initiatives.
