Conducted by Ark Wildlife, the study named BCU a ‘Gold Tier’ university for doing its best to promote wildlife protection and for its commitment to promoting biodiversity on campus.

Environmental Manager at BCU, Deborah Phelpstead, praised the efforts of the University’s dedicated on-campus Gardening team “who work so hard” to maintain wildlife-friendly initiatives and protect biodiversity on campus.

Ark Wildlife’s study and the ‘Gold Tier’ recognition also considered BCU’s contribution to local wildlife and opportunities for staff and students to participate in sustainable practices.

The BCU Students Union Sustainability Society and Gardening Society offers students the chance to get involved with maintaining the campus beehives as well as wildflower and tree-planting events.

Director at Ark Wildlife, Sean McMenemy spoke about the importance of universities like BCU prioritising wildlife conservation.

Birmingham City University was also recognised by Ark Wildlife for participation in initiatives such as the Hedgehog Friendly Campus (HFC) scheme, however BCU Environmental Manager Deborah believes there is always room for improvement.

“While we’ve made big strides to improve our environmental impact, we know there’s still a long way to go to ensure we put the environment and sustainability at the heart of everything BCU does,” she concluded.
