Dr Melanie Marie-Heywood has become Birmingham City University’s new Dean of Students in what has been described as a "landmark moment" for the institution.
She moves into the role from her current post as Director for the Education Development Service.
As Dean, Mel will champion the pivotal role of personal tutors, ensuring teaching practices drive significant improvements in student experience and league table performance.
She will also be responsible for ensuring that every student’s learning journey is inclusive, diverse, and rewarding - preparing them to successfully launch their careers.
“Having worked for BCU for some time and understanding the wealth of potential we have within our student body, this role stood out as being enormously appealing,’ said Mel.
With a wealth of experience in senior positions across the UK and Caribbean higher education, Mel has been instrumental in enhancing student outcomes and led the development of BCU's Access and Participation Plan.
“Our recent performance in both the National Student Survey and Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey indicates that BCU is well-placed to build on a culture that is centred on the needs of students," she said.
“It’s why I am both excited and proud to have been appointed Dean of Students, and I am eager to begin working directly with Schools to deliver the rewarding experience that our students need to thrive.”
Pro Vice-Chancellor Education Marcia Wilson said: “The establishment of a Dean of Students will become a landmark moment in BCU’s history, and I am sure Mel will set an enviable standard for all the Deans that follow.
“Mel will bring extensive academic leadership experience to this role and has a track record of achieving improved student outcomes and positively impacting student recruitment.
“I look forward to seeing how Mel takes on this opportunity and helps us to deliver on the ‘Develop the Talent of Tomorrow’ pillar of our Strategy for 2030."
Mel begins her new role on 1 September. Her appointment is the latest in a series of senior hires following the implementation of BCU's new academic structure, which came into force on 1 August.
