University News Last updated 18 August 2011
As this year’s A Level results are released today (Thursday 18th August) Birmingham City University has announced it still has places available within Birmingham School of Architecture, starting this September.
This year competition for places at university is expected to be tougher than ever as young people attempt to find places before the tuition fees increase in 2012. However as the BA Architecture course lasts longer than most undergraduate courses – five years – there will extra places available in Clearing on this course, and the BA Landscape Architecture, in order to make studying for a career in architecture more affordable.
Kevin Singh, Head of Birmingham School of Architecture, is urging students to consider Birmingham City University. He said: “Birmingham Institute of Art and Design is the largest art institution outside London. Our location and course portfolio allows us to tap into how our City is evolving. We also have fantastic links with local practices, often due to alumni relationships and I think these kind of relationships will be critical as architectural education is about to go through a very challenging period.
“Students enrolling this year will gain fantastic real-world experience on our courses. For example, students on the BA Architecture will gain an insight into working within the sector as they will undertake projects based on the University’s new £61 million state-of-the-art City Centre Campus, scheduled to open its doors to students in 2013.
“The University promotes employability within all its courses and Birmingham School of Architecture has outstanding employability rates of 92% of students in employment or further study six months after graduation. In addition, we have well-established links with the best local architectural, landscape architecture and urban design practices in the region.
“Birmingham School of Architecture also has a developing research portfolio with particular strengths in sustainability, landscape and urbanism, and design methodologies. The School boasts an expert base of academic staff who provide consultancy and enterprise services to clients in industry and the public sector, including Ruth Reed, the first ever female President of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
“Our courses are fully validated by RIBA and the Landscape Institute and we have a strong track record of producing graduates who excel in the field. For example, Associated Architects has been hailed by RIBA as “probably the best architectural practice outside London” – three of its four Directors are graduates, the fourth has lectured for the School.”
Birmingham City University will open its ‘Clearing’ hotline at 8am on Thursday 18th August, for anyone who has not gained the A Level grades needed for their chosen courses. The University will have a dedicated team of advisers available who will be able to help prospective students who have just missed out on the grades needed for the degree they want to study. The Clearing hotline number is 0121 331 6777 and prospective students are advised to visit the UCAS website and university website www.bcu.ac.uk/student-info/how-to-apply/clearing/overview to find out what is available in Clearing, and to ensure that they have enough points to get onto the course of their choice.
