Open event for a new regional academy for creative students

This month, creative youngsters will find out how they can apply to become the first set of new students in 2011 at a new academy for creative, digital and performing arts.

BOA (Birmingham Ormiston Academy) will open in 2011 and has 2 open days on September 18, from 10am to 1.30pm and September 20, between 7.30pm and 9.30pm, both at Millennium Point, Birmingham.

Many of BOA’s partners such as Maverick TV, The BRIT School and the Birmingham Repertory Theatre will be holding practical workshops at the open event on both Saturday and Monday. As well as these, workshops and exhibitions in gaming, web design, rotoscoping, animation, music, singing, art and design and theatre production will also be available.

Students who have a passion for the creative, digital and performing arts, will have the chance to study at BOA and work alongside key industry professionals.

BOA is a brand new academy for the creative, digital and performing arts. Located in the heart of Birmingham, BOA is a regional academy admitting students not only from Birmingham, but also the surrounding metropolitan boroughs and wider West Midlands region.

BOA is sponsored by Ormiston Trust, Birmingham City University and partnered with Maverick TV and the BRIT School. It will open in September 2011 for sixth form years and will include 14-16 year-olds in 2012.

The academy will be located in a brand new £25 million state-of-the-art building, which is located next to Millennium Point, geographically placed in an area at the hub of the digital and creative industries. It will have superb facilities for academic, vocational and extra-curricular activities.

BOA is a free to attend academy, but the students are selected through attending aptitude workshops.

An innovative staffing structure will combine excellent teachers with skilled professionals from industry, ensuring that teaching is of the highest quality and that students are able to apply their learning to the world of work.

Gaynor Cheshire, Principal Designate of BOA said “BOA is an exciting new venture. This new academy gives youngsters in the West Midlands the chance to specialise in the subjects they love. We’re really excited to see everyone on the 2 open days and are looking forward to showcase what BOA can offer the region.”
