Food photography, job websites, live music and even a radio drama have been showcased at an exhibition for employers organised by Birmingham City University students.
Called Exhibit This, the show displayed final-year BA (Hons) Media and Communications degree students’ work. The exhibition was organised almost entirely by the students with the aim of showing bosses the skills they have that will make them a valuable addition to the workplace.
Work on show included a TV company called MuckyDuckMedia which was formed to produce a drama; Kryptonite Entertainment, a radio production company, which has produced a radio series about the fight against knife crime and The Grade, a website which offers graduates expert advice, tips and information through a range of interviews, advertisements and podcasts.
The evening attracted a number of employers including the BBC, independent TV companies, national and regional press, radio and PR companies. Julia Willoughby from Birmingham-based Willoughby PR said: “Each year a panel of PR professionals look forward to meeting the students and seeing their final year projects. It is a highlight of our links with the CIPR accredited degree course and this year the students exceeded all our expectations. The ideas and thought process behind their campaigns was inspirational and the breadth of communication channels, including social media was outstanding.
“This year’s show was especially visual and it was fantastic to see how all elements of marketing and design were integrated across the projects and the strength of team work was apparent. Lots of fantastic talent that will be an asset to the future organisations they will start their careers with.”
The employers' evening was held on Monday 7 June at the The Bond, Digbeth, and the following night the exhibition was opened up to friends, family and members of the public. Duncan Sedgwick, Senior Lecturer MA Events and Event Management who guided the students through the planning and execution of the exhibition said: “The students exhibited great teamwork and effort in putting this event together, and their hard work was evident in the quality of work on display, and in the smooth running of the event itself. The feedback from visitors has been fantastic!”
