A student at Birmingham City University has received a scholarship from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) to boost her journalism studies.

30-year-old Ola Bisoye Dosunmu, from Moseley in Birmingham, has been awarded a scholarship of £4,800 to fund her vocational postgraduate course in Broadcast Journalism at Birmingham School of Media, part of Birmingham City University.

BAFTA is an independent charity that supports, develops and promotes the art forms of the moving image by identifying and rewarding excellence, inspiring practitioners and benefiting the public.

Ola and five other students from Nottinghamshire, Hampshire, West Midlands, Merseyside and South Wales were selected to receive the new BAFTA scholarship following an open call to students on eligible UK courses. BAFTA’s Scholarship Programme assists talented people in need of financial support to study a postgraduate course in film, television or games.

Scholarship recipients will also receive mentoring support from BAFTA members and free access to BAFTA events across the UK. In return, scholarship recipients will share their learning experiences on the BAFTA Guru website and participate in future BAFTA outreach to schools.

On receiving her award, Ola said: “It’s incredible that despite all the cuts being made in every sector of the economy, BAFTA is investing in young creative talent. The BAFTA Scholarship not only pays my fees, it will give me access to the industry which is priceless and otherwise unobtainable.”

Diane Kemp, Senior Lecturer in Broadcast Journalism at Birmingham City University, said: “We’re delighted that Ola’s won this prestigious scholarship. She’s an excellent student and her recognition by a national organisation like BAFTA is a reflection of the quality of people who come onto our courses.”

Birmingham School of Media is a recognised centre of excellence in providing media education in the UK. The Broadcast Journalism postgraduate course is professionally recognised and accredited by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council.
