Student shines bright like a diamond

A Birmingham City University student is looking forward to a sparkling future in gemmology after being awarded the coveted Mok Diamond Practical Prize.

24-year-old Timothy Li was awarded the prize for gaining the highest mark in the Gemmological Association’s (Gem-A) diamond grading practical exam in 2012.

The exam consisted of a theory based exam, based on science, history and manufacturing of diamonds followed by a practical exam where Timothy was required to grade the quality and authenticity of a diamond.

Timothy - who is in the final year of the HND Gemmology course - moved from Hong Kong to the UK with his family in 2002. After completing a degree in Chemistry at the University in York, he moved to Birmingham so he could pursue his interest in gemmology at Birmingham City University’s School of Jewellery. He said: “I was amazed to receive the award as I didn’t think I had done that well in the exam. I think this award is mostly down to the excellent teaching of my tutor and the support I have received throughout the course.”

Timothy was presented with his award by Gaetano Cavalieri, president of the World Jewellery Federation (CIBJO) at an awards ceremony in London. After graduating this summer he hopes to work in a lab, allowing him to further explore his interest in gemstones and other materials.
