Staff and students from the University’s Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) department promoted their work at an event organised by Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust and Birmingham REP earlier this month.
A production of The King’s Speech at The REP inspired the theatre to showcase the SLT activity carried out across Birmingham. A two day event held at the theatre included the premiere of a film made by a group of young people, advice sessions with Speech and Language Therapists, stalls and demonstrations.
The University’s SLT team had a stand and used the event to raise awareness of its BSc (Hons) course and of training requirements more generally.
As Gillian Rudd, Senior Lecturer in the School of Allied and Public Health Professions, explains, attending the event had a number of benefits for the department and students, “We spoke to prospective and current applicants, as well as catching up with several of our graduates who are now employed within the trust.
“It was a great opportunity to raise awareness of SLT education and training, for our students to network with a range of professionals and national organisations and for the students to develop their skills in health promotion activity.”
