On Giving Tuesday (27 November), former England cricketer Ashley Giles switched on the lights for Birmingham City University’s Macmillan Tree of Light at a festive event in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support’s annual Christmas campaign.

University staff, students and members of the local community were invited to attend the event where they could sponsor a light on the tree in memory of friends or loved ones who have been touched by cancer.

The event, which was held at the University’s City South Campus, featured festive treats including mince pies and mulled wine, and aimed to raise £1,500 for the charity.

Associate Dean for the Faculty of Health, Education and Life Sciences, Louise Toner, said: “We are extremely proud to support this campaign once again this year. As a Faculty of health, education and life science professionals, we see first-hand the difference Macmillan Cancer Support makes to the lives of people and families affected by cancer, as do so many of our health students.
