David Cox, OBE, is set to receive an honorary doctoral degree from Birmingham City University next week.
The award will be conferred in recognition of David's outstanding achievements within the NHS and past service to the University.
David has been Chair of South Birmingham PCT since April 2002, having been re-appointed to the post in 2006. His longstanding involvement in health and equality issues within the region and beyond include work on training, skills, diversity and employment for Birmingham's Health and Well-Being Partnership, work as an assessor for the National NHS Breaking Through leadership development programme and member of the Board and trustee of BRAP, a Birmingham based equalities "think tank". He is also a member of the Council of the NHS Confederation representing the West Midlands.
David was previously a Primary Care Group lay member and Chair of South Birmingham Community Health Council.
David became involved with Birmingham City University, then Birmingham Polytechnic, in 1970 and remained with the institution until 2007 when he retired as Associate Dean in the Faculty of Health. During his time at the University, he won the admiration of both staff and students. In addition to teaching sociology and organisational theory and practice, David developed and assessed the quality of a wide range of courses. He was also involved in the evolution and academic governance of the institution and in the major development of the University's portfolio of health service professional education. Following his retirement, David was made an Emeritus Professor of the University.
In 2009, David was awarded an OBE for services to healthcare in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.
A true advocate of health and wellbeing, David is a keen cyclist and once campaigned for the bicycle mileage allowance at the University. He rides with a local club and is Vice-Chair of the national Cyclists Touring Club.
His award is due to be conferred at 4.00pm on Tuesday 26th January at the Awards Congregation ceremony in Symphony Hall which will celebrate the work and achievements of students graduating from the Faculty of Health.
