Leading health expert honoured with University award

The Chairman of the independent body set up by the government, responsible for shaping the future of the NHS will receive an honorary doctoral degree from Birmingham City University next week in recognition of his outstanding achievements within the NHS.

Professor Steve Field CBE is Chairman of the NHS Future Forum, launched by the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and the Secretary of State for Health in April 2011 to listen to people across England, and reflect on their concerns and suggestions so that the Government can improve its legislation on the future of the service.

Steve is also Chairman of the National Inclusion Health Board – Improving the health of the most vulnerable, which as its title suggests, focuses on improving the health outcomes of vulnerable groups (such as the homeless, Gypsies and Travellers, and sex workers) and ensuring equality in healthcare and health outcomes across communities, regardless of need.

Steve practises as a GP at Bellevue Medical Centre in Birmingham, a large academic training practice, involved in research and health care education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It provides a wide range of innovative clinical services in a deprived inner city area.

Steve gained an international reputation in the field of healthcare education as Postgraduate Medical Dean and Head of Workforce Development for the NHS in the West Midlands and was Chairman of Council of the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) between 2007 and 2010.

He is Honorary Professor in the School of Medicine at the University of Birmingham; Honorary Professor, Medical Education at the University of Warwick; and a Member of Faculty at the Harvard Macy Institute, Harvard University, in Boston, Massachusetts. He received a CBE for his Services to Medicine in the Queen’s 2010 New Year’s Honours List.

Steve will receive the award on Monday 20th February at the Awards Congregation ceremony which will celebrate the work and achievements of students graduating from the Faculty of Health.
