Birmingham City University Textiles student Rosie Gee was announced as Hand & Lock prize winner for her extraordinary embroidery at the annual Hand & Lock competition 2019.
Rosie Gee’s ‘Palpable’ collection takes inspiration from the beauty in nature, focussing on the notion of sensory overload and the innate need to touch. Rosie managed to grab the judges’ attention with her outstanding craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Her collection features techniques such as intricate tambour beading, goldwork and hand crafted 3D embellishments, providing a contrasting contemporary twist on traditional embroidery.
Taking home second place, Rosie was presented with an embroidered plaque, gifted with a six month subscription to Selvedge Magazine and offered a weekend course at Hand & Lock.
As one of the finalists, Rosie was introduced to an industry mentor – Diana Springall, giving her the opportunity to perfect her designs, with the support and guidance from an expert in the field. Diana’s career spans over forty years and her work can be found in many private and public collections including; the Embroiderers' Guild and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
Hand & Lock presents new designers with an incredible opportunity to showcase their talents and gain vital exposure. The competition receives thousands of entries from fashion and textiles students worldwide. Previous winners have continued to build prosperous businesses and worked for a number of renowned brands.
The Hand & Lock prize is yet another outstanding achievement for Rosie Gee, following on from her recent involvement in creating a piece of stage-wear for singing sensation Beyonce Knowles.
