Dr Gregory Leadbetter, Lecturer in Creative Writing at Birmingham City University, spoke at an event this week focusing on creative writing and the impact it has on society.

In collaboration with the Institute of English Studies, the public seminar event organised by the Open University and held at the University of London included discussions on the rise of creative writing, its culture within universities and how this may affect wider culture.

From the University’s School of English, Dr Leadbetter also discussed the work of poets at the event. He said: “Over the last 20 years the teaching of creative writing has become an established presence within universities. At this public seminar I spoke about the impact of that development, particularly on poetry and discussed its significant implications both for universities and our wider culture.”

Also speaking at the event was Stephanie Norgate, a playwright and poet who teaches Creative Writing at the University of Chichester.

The ‘Rise of Creative Writing’ seminar ran from 5:30pm until 7:30pm at the University of London’s Senate House on Tuesday 1 May 2012. Further information can be found here.
