Kaleidoscope: The Swinging Sixties - A Decade of Outstanding Television

The Sixties - a decade that saw Britain emerge from rationing and ended with colour TV and flower power.

Kaleidoscope is delighted to present a day of guests and screenings highlighting the best of television's offerings in the sixties.

10am Start the day with a 1969 Granada opening film

10.05 Jango - Treacle on Three Fingers tx: 15.3.1961 Associated Rediffusion
Gentle detective drama with Robert Urquhart as Jango Smith. This print was first advertised to be screened in the 1990s by Kaleidoscope but the private collector who owned it found there was damage on the print. The print has now been restored and is complete again.

10.30 The Frost Report - Sin tx: 24.3.1966 BBC
Comedy with David Frost, Julie Felix, Ronnie Barker, John Cleese, Ronnie Corbett and Nicky Henson.

11am The Trouble with Men - tx: 13.6.1962 Granada
Famous women including Penelope Mortimer, Hazel Adair, Fanny Cradock and Margaret Thatcher give their opinion of men. This programme has survived on videotape.

Midday Softly Softly - Talk to Me tx: 2.2.1966 rx: 16.11.1965 BBC
The original pilot episode found by Kaleidoscope last year. With Stratford Johns, Frank Windsor, Robert Keegan, Garfield Morgan, John Woodnutt and Ivor Salter.

1pm Play School - 5th Birthday Show tx: 10.4.1969 BBC
Join presenters Miranda Connell and Jonathan Dennis to celebrate in colour.

1.25 Steptoe and Son - The untransmitted 1965 US pilot
Many years before Sanford and Son, the US television networks considered making Steptoe and Son. This pilot is a re-working of 'The Offer' and survived as a 35mm film kept by Ray Galton, and it was recovered from his basement by Kaleidoscope in 2013.

1.55 The Liver Birds - An Interesting Condition tx: 25.7.1969 BBC
Only four minutes survives from the first series starring Pauline Collins and Polly James.

2pm Break

2.15 Join Lionel Blair and Brian Tesler as they talk about the work of ABC Television and the numerous variety shows made by ATV and ABC, in particular. The panel will be illustrated by clips from shows as varied as 'Sammy Davis Jr meets the British', 'Spotlight' and the 'Glad Rag Ball'.

3pm This Is Your Life - Honor Blackman tx: 17.12.1969 Thames Television
Eamonn Andrews surprises former Bond and Avengers girl Honor Blackman. Colour VT.

3.30 The Peggy Lee Show - tx: 26.8.1961 ABC
Made at Didsbury, Peggy Lee is joined by Bing Crosby and Sammy Cahn. This programme was re-discovered by Kaleidoscope in 2016.

4.15 Goodbye Again - Episode 1 tx: 18.8.1968 ATV
Pete and Dud, uncut and largely unseen since 1968.

5.15 Love Story - The Girl Opposite tx: 1.11.1965 ATV
Written by Roman Polanski, and directed by John Cooper; Dudley Moore plays Kuba, a Polish bird watcher who finds a girl opposite to admire. With Dudley Moore, Joanna Wake, Geoffrey Whitehead and Fiona Hartford.

6pm Play Bach - tx: 12.4.1965
A closedown programme on original videotape.
