A team comprising students from BCU and our US exchange partner Auburn University won the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Region 8, Design-Build Competition last week. The ASC event was hosted on 7-8 November by Salford University at the Salford Innovation Forum.
Some 70 students took part in the event, which involved two separate competitions: Design-Build and Construction Management/Quantity Surveying. BCU entered three teams from CEBE across both competitions, one of which came first in Design-Build and another placed third in the same track.
The international event was sponsored by Autodesk and PlanGrid, while the competition briefs and judging panels were sponsored by construction companies Laing O’Rourke and Morgan Sindall.
Coach and Quantity Surveying Course Leader Angela Kilby said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to demonstrate their knowledge in a ‘real world’ setting. Not only did my team take first place, but another BCU team was awarded third place. It’s wonderful watching our Built Environment students competing on an International stage and showcasing their knowledge and talent. I am extremely proud of my team and their achievements and I am proud of the other two teams and their performance throughout the competition.”
Associate Dean Professor Nick Morton said: “The ASC Region 8 competition is a fantastic opportunity for students to work in partnership in teams, and to present their ideas directly to senior professionals from industry. The feedback they receive is invaluable in helping them develop their skills, knowledge and practice experience.”
