Birmingham City University has announced it is offering a number of Masters and Doctoral studentships in design and fine art.
Totalling a significant £68,000, the awards are funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and include: one research preparation masters studentship in fine art, three professional preparation masters studentships across design and fine art and one doctoral studentship in design.
All awards are offered by Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD) for an October 2011 start and only available to UK and EU students.
Graphic Designer and Marketer Katie Connor, was successful in applying for a studentship in 2009. “After establishing my own creative consultancy, Fiftytwo Degrees North, studying for an MA seemed like a natural route of progression. Despite my aspirations however, the realities of affording to study at postgraduate level were a real concern. Fortunately, I was informed about the studentships available through the AHRC and having successfully completed the application and interview process I am now happily studying for my MA in Design Management. I study on a flexible learning basis, which means in addition to my studies I continue to have the freedom (and time) to run my business.
“I'd highly recommend applying for a studentship to anyone who has the ambition and motivation to study at postgraduate level, but perhaps not the financial backing of their employer. For me, securing my studentship award has provided me with a fantastic learning opportunity that without funding simply wouldn't have existed. I'm confident that completing my MA will provide new opportunities and experiences both for me personally and for my business, and thanks to the support of AHRC and BIAD, I'm genuinely excited about what the future holds”.
BIAD is a leading centre for research in the creative arts, architecture and design. In the recent RAE research in art and design was ranked among the top 10 submissions in the country with a rating of 100 per cent world-leading research environment.
Applications are welcome from well qualified candidates wishing to pursue projects which align with BIAD’s areas of research strength across art and design. Proposals are also welcome that involve collaboration across research areas. Applications are assessed on intellectual merit and contribution to the University’s strategic priorities, and in relation to supervisory capacity.
Closing date for entries is 11 April 2011.
