Interior Educators (IE) is the national subject association which represents well-established Interior Design, Interior Architecture and Spatial Design degree programmes the in UK and Ireland, and provides a forum for debate and the exchange of ideas.

Its annual Re-Define show comprises an exhibition of student work, which will be held this year at London’s OXO Gallery, and student awards to recognise achievement in design and writing.

We are delighted that two students from Birmingham School of Architecture and Design have been shortlisted for the 2021 awards.

Final year student Gertruda Blazaityte has made the shortlist for the Craft and Making award which celebrates examples of admirable care and skill from a range of design disciplines.

Gertruda’s project, Forest Hub (pictured above), is a wood innovation centre which proposes sustainable and innovative design solutions where biomimicry is being used to inspire and improve a building’s energy efficiency. It brings together researches, students, and local residents to build a healthier and more sustainable urban city, providing the community with a space to connect with nature.

Molly Ratcliffe's design work

Second year student Molly Ratcliffe has been shortlisted for the Climate Emergency and Sustainability awards in the Progressing Student category. This award recognises projects which address climate change, energy use, resource depletion, biodiversity and other ways in which people can live within the Earth’s natural limits.

Molly’s project (pictured right) aims to preserve the heritage of the Jewellery Quarter through community engagements which merging historic with modern and sustain a future for jewellery makers. Materiality and tactility drive her design to encourage users to develop an emotional connection with the building, while sustainability and attention to acoustics will create a habitable building with long-lasting and durable materials.

The winners will be announced on Friday 9 July, and we wish Gertruda and Molly the best of luck!
