MA Product Design student Yu-Chung Chang wowed juries at the most recent Spark awards and picked up a Gold Spark Design award for his P-Ruler concept design.
Yu-Chung’s prize-winning design was created to simplify the way measurements are taken on building sites. At present several tools are usually needed to take measurements and attempting to read a ruler can be difficult when calculating large heights and distances. The P-Ruler solves this by combining a flashlight, precision square, tape ruler, horizontal level, laser level, reel tape and measuring wheel into one convenient and easy to use tool.
The P-Ruler works by pointing a flashlight to the end point that needs measuring. A ruler is then projected on to the surface being measured and the data is enlarged making it easy for the user to read. The different modes enable the person using it to measure length, angle, area and distance.
Commenting on his win, Yu-Chung (pictured) said:
The awards took place in San Francisco and Hong Kong and student designs were selected by live juries who debated the wide variety of submissions. They examined the entries using a number of factors, including technology, aesthetic and their unique selling points before awarding contestants bronze, silver and gold awards.
Entries were submitted by students from universities across the world and Yu-Chung was the only contestant from a UK university to win an award. When asked about the highlights of studying MA Product Design at Birmingham City University he answered:
