BCU Researcher delivers presentation on Legal Technology

Dr Alan Ma, Lecturer in Law at Birmingham City University alongside Mr Damian Croker, Legal Tech CEO, Mediator and Arbitrator delivered a hybrid presentation entitled, ‘Contemporary Issues that affect the future of Law – Legal Technology, Law Practices, and Climate Change’ on 1st November 2022.

This joint hybrid event for BCU Law students was co-hosted by the West Midlands Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the Birmingham Branch of the British Computing Society, the Chartered Institute of IT; the Society of Computers and Law and Birmingham City University School of Law.

Legal Tech and the Climate

Dr Alan Ma, who is qualified in engineering, IT and Law, presented on “Legal tech adoption in Law firms”. Citing independent surveys and industry feedback, Dr Ma explained that law firms can stay competitive using technology if they embrace a range of new technologies to improve internal support functions and deliver legal services.

Mr Crocker’s presentation was on “LegalTech, Lawyers and the Climate”. Mr Crocker addressed how the legal industry and its IT partner can play an important role in mitigating the impact of climate change through technology and alternative dispute resolution.

Dr Alan Ma said:

“This event opened to both external participants from the three organising professional bodies and our internal BCU’s students.  It was wonderful to see our students learning the application of state-of-the-art research in practice and engaging in discussions with real-world practitioners on the various issues that shape the future of law. We continue our efforts to prepare our students for the job of tomorrow using the latest research findings”.
