Two BA (Hons) Jewellery and Objects students are celebrating after being awarded prizes at The British Art Medal Society’s (BAMS) Student Medal Project 2018.
Competing against over 100 students from art colleges from across the UK, Huub Boekhorst was awarded the ‘Eric Gill Society Prize for the use of Lettering’ and Joran Pettite-Furze took home the award for ‘Cutting Edge medal by the Worshipful Company of Cutlers’.
The Student Medal Project encourages and promotes the art of making medals throughout art colleges in the United Kingdom. The Worshipful Company of Founders, the Worshipful Company of Cutlers and Thomas Fattorini Ltd are among the institutions that support the project, and the British Museum sometimes purchases particularly meritorious student medals. It’s a wonderful opportunity for students to view the work made by peers and join them at the annual conference.
Alongside the winners, 10 other students had their work on show as part of the student medal competition. A catalogue is published, which includes entries for everyone who participates and stands as a record for those at the start of their careers.
A number of students and staff, including BA (Hons) Jewellery and Objects Lecturer and artist Drew Markou, visited the BAMS Student Medal Project 2018 Symposium held at UCA Rochester. The day started with a welcome from the Debra Allman, Course Leader for a number of jewellery courses within the University. Students then had chance to hear from Marcy Leavitt Bourne, Council of the British Art Medal Society and Director of the Student Medal Project.
After a number of talks, and a break for lunch, students had the opportunity to participate in a medal handling session with members of the British Art Medal Society and the British Museum. They also had chance to join in a demonstration of casting a token in the workshop.
The day’s activities finished with the prize-giving and reception ceremony. Rick Scorza, BAMS President announced the student awards, including the two winners from Birmingham City University’s School of Jewellery.
