Short course
Debridement Techniques in Practice – One day Practical Skills Workshop
This specialist one-day workshop has been designed for registered healthcare professionals involved in wound assessment and management who wish to develop advanced knowledge, clinical decision-making skills and practical competence in conservative sharp debridement. Combining evidence-based theory with extensive hands-on training, delegates will gain the confidence and skills required to undertake debridement safely and effectively within clinical practice
Overview
Debridement is a vital component of wound bed preparation and plays a significant role in reducing infection risk, promoting healing and improving patient outcomes. This intensive practical workshop provides delegates with a comprehensive understanding of wound assessment, the principles and methods of debridement, patient safety considerations and the management of complex wounds.
The course is led by Pam Cooper, Associate Lecturer and a Nurse Consultant in Tissue Viability, an experienced clinician with extensive expertise in wound management, debridement practice and the treatment of complex wounds. Delegates will benefit from expert instruction, clinical case discussions and supervised practical skills sessions using a range of debridement instruments and techniques.
Through hands-on practice and real-world clinical scenarios, participants will learn how to assess wound presentations, select appropriate debridement methods, remove necrotic tissue and biofilm safely, and manage more complex wound care challenges. On completion, delegates will have increased confidence and competence to apply these skills in their own clinical settings, contributing to improved patient experiences and better healing outcomes.
Learning Outcomes
-
Demonstrate an understanding of wound healing, wound bed preparation and the principles, indications and contraindications of debridement
-
Safely assess patients and select appropriate debridement techniques based on clinical presentation, risk assessment and individual patient needs
-
Develop practical competence and confidence in conservative sharp debridement techniques, including management of necrotic tissue, slough, biofilm and complex wound presentations using different modalities – scalpel, curette, scissors
Who would benefit?
This course is suitable for registered healthcare professionals involved in wound assessment and wound management, including:
- Tissue Viability Nurses
- Community Nurses
- District Nurses
- Practice Nurses
- Podiatrists
- Specialist Nurses
- Allied Health Professionals
- Advanced Clinical Practitioners
- Other registered clinicians with responsibility for wound care management
Delegates should have a basic understanding of wound care and be actively involved in the management of patients with acute, chronic or complex wounds. The course is particularly valuable for clinicians wishing to expand their competence in conservative sharp debridement and advanced wound management techniques
Course in Depth
The workshop combines focused theoretical learning with extensive practical skills development.
The morning session explores the principles and methods of debridement, including wound healing, wound bed preparation, patient assessment, clinical decision-making and risk management. Delegates will review indications and contraindications for debridement and examine the evidence supporting different approaches to wound management.
Practical sessions provide supervised experience using a variety of instruments and techniques. Delegates will develop skills in the safe use of scalpels, curettes, scissors and forceps while managing common wound presentations including necrosis, slough, biofilm and wound edge management.
Practical activities utilise simulated wound materials to allow delegates to safely build competence and confidence.
The afternoon programme focuses on advanced skills including bone sampling techniques, clinical case reviews, competency frameworks and practical application of debridement principles in challenging wound scenarios. Delegates will have opportunities to discuss real clinical cases and apply their learning to everyday practice.
