Damian’s plans to go to uni were in shatters after he got disappointing results in his A Levels. However, despite being in Poland at the time, he applied through Clearing and was able to sort out a place at BCU in a matter of days. He’s gone on to have a fantastic uni experience and has big ambitions for his career.
“I was in Poland for the Summer visiting family when I got my results and was disappointed to see that I hadn’t achieved what I’d hoped for. It was a really disappointing and stressful time and I was really worried my results had shattered my plans to go to uni. I really had to make myself stop and take a deep breath and think to myself there’s no point panicking and getting ready to quit, there’s got to be something else I can do to make this work.
I had never really heard of Clearing before but saw a post on BCU’s Twitter that said to contact them if you wanted to be able to discuss options and apply through Clearing, so I got in touch. The staff were so helpful, they explained to me what Clearing was, how to apply, what options and courses were available to me. I received so much information through social media alone and this really helped to alleviate my uncertainty and panic and instead focus on my ambition and career goals.
I’m the first person in my family to go to uni. My parents were really proud of this but it did add a bit of pressure when I realised I hadn’t got the grades I needed. They were so supportive of me applying through Clearing to see what other options I had and could pursue.
I’d had a college visit from BCU and I was really impressed with the modern facilities compared to other universities. This made it clear to me that I wanted to try and get a place there. I also live in the city centre so it was really ideal for me to be able to stay at home and commute initially. I love Birmingham, so was really keen to be able to stay here and there are a lot of opportunities and career options here.

In a matter of days, I was offered a place at the University, to do a foundation year in business management. So far my experience at BCU has been really great and I’m pleased that I ended up on the course I’m on. Doing the foundation year has actually helped me prepare so much more. I was able to have my fun and social experiences during my foundation year and then moving into my first year I felt much more mature and had my head in the game. I got to really develop my social and life skills before diving into nurturing my academic skills.
I’ve met so many great individuals, really learned about myself and my career goals. I’m really keen to get into to get into marketing, potentially the more creative and production side, but there is so many industry routes that I could take it’s really exciting to have such a choice of pathway.”
Damian has some great advice for anyone who hasn’t achieved the results they hoped for.
“Honestly, no matter how bad you do, there's always a possibility awaiting, all you have to do is ask. Believe in yourself and the ambition that you have and where you want to be. Don’t let yourself be defined by college grades as there’s so much more you have to offer and learn about yourself. “
