Our postgraduate diploma in Multi-Unit Leadership and Strategy is designed to help those currently working as an area manager gain the extra skills and knowledge needed to become a successful multi-unit manager.

We’ll look at the five key attributes of effective multi-site managers – expertise, emotional intelligence, entrepreneurialism, energy and ethics.
You’ll explore staff deployment and use of capacity, as well as devising exciting business strategies and showing great self-awareness. As a multi-unit manager, you’ll be responsible for a number of branch managers and staff, so you must possess a strong amount of trustworthiness and a good moral compass. You’ll also be responsible for helping keep customers happy and sales high, so a strong knowledge of what customers want, alongside a drive to succeed, is highly desirable.
Businesses need to change and adapt to move with the times, so this course will also provide a critical understanding of how to lead change, ensuring you make the right decisions that guarantee a good transition for a business.

Here are the key areas you’ll need to address:
Studying a postgraduate course usually means you want to specialise in something. So what’s driving you?
Show that you’ve researched the course offering. What is it about this particular course that appeals to you? Is it the lecturers? The modules? Etc.
Tutors want to know that you can handle postgraduate study, so show them how your undergraduate experiences or work life has equipped you for a more advanced level of study. Key areas to address are research and group work but this can vary depending on your chosen course.
Add anything relevant that relates back to your chosen course and shows how your skills will contribute towards your learning. What extra-curricular activities have you taken part in? What awards have you won? What employment or voluntary experience do you have that has helped you develop transferable skills? How do these specifically relate to the course you are applying for?
You should also mention your future plans and how a postgraduate qualification fits in. Try to look beyond your postgraduate study – do you plan to jump straight into a specific career or follow your studies with a research degree? Lastly, use plain, professional English and, where possible, utilise the language of your chosen industry.

Each module will be assessed either by assignment or a written report with presentation.
Strategy and Branding
You’ll learn how to make an impact on firm and brand performances at different stages of their life-cycle. You’ll understand the range of customer segments within the multi-unit portfolio, and critically analyse the alignment of the company strategy with the position and execution of the standard branded offer.
Leading Service and Change
This module encourages you to be critical and explore your preparedness for leadership within this environment. You’ll also look at the concepts and frameworks that will improve your effectiveness to drive service and change, as well as the tools that will equip you to make a difference.
Finance and Business Models
You’ll examine and evaluate the input drivers of profit and loss success. You’ll take part in a supervised business simulation that’ll broaden your understanding. You’ll assimilate and interpret large volumes of financial operating data to gain insight into appropriate managerial actions to improve performance.
Operational Improvement and Innovation
You’ll learn to improve operational efficiency and the way businesses operate through advanced process mapping. A business thrives on cost, sales and service optimisation, so you’ll study these three areas and understand the vital importance of process efficiency ( cost, speed, quality, safety, dependability and flexibility).
In-Company Research Project
This module will give you the opportunity to pursue a significant/extended individual research activity which relates learning from your taught modules to the analysis of a particular issue in your field of study.
This project will consist of a 5,000-word assignment, followed by an hour-long presentation to a panel, where you’ll discuss the report and be able to justify your recommendations and conclusions.
The course is delivered part-time over 13 months and consists of 14 workshop days, supported periods of self-study.
For all assessments, emphasis is placed upon combining multi-site practice-based learning with rigorous frameworks and concepts supplied by our multi-site experts. This takes the form of lectures, case studies, videos and group work. You’ll reflect on your own performance and experiences, as well as using the skills you learn on the course in your professional role.
Submissions for each of the first four modules are written reports of 2,500 words, while for the fifth module, you’ll conduct a 5,000-word report based on solving a major multi-site business challenge.
On completion of this course, you can progress on to the Masters course to gain the qualifications, knowledge and skills needed to rise up the career leader and conduct your role effectively and professionally.

Professor Chris Edger holds the chair of Multi-Unit Leadership at Birmingham City Business School (BCBS), Birmingham City University. He has also taught at the University of Birmingham and the Warwick Business School, where he was the winner of several teaching excellence awards on the Warwick MBA Programme.
